Getting started

Welcome to Cthulhu Chronicles – the interactive fiction horror mobile game based on Chaosium’s award-winning role-playing game Call of Cthulhu. This narrative-driven, immersive campaign experience comprises multiple stories set in the 1920s New England. You play as one of several investigators, trying to untangle the mysteries involving crazy cults, sinister creatures, and horrors from beyond space.

The Cthulhu Mythos

Based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft, the Cthulhu Mythos is a living, complex and broad group of sometimes contradictory narratives, stories, essays, letters, and games. At the heart of the Mythos is Lovecraft’s assertion that fundamental truths of the universe are so alien and horrifying to mortals that mere exposure to them may lead to madness or death.

This ‘cosmic nihilism’ proved irresistible to many authors, musicians and artists – among them Henry Kuttner and Clark Ashton Smith, Metallica and Black Sabbath, Stephen King and Charles Stross – who over the years have paid homage, and in some cases even contributed to the Mythos. New material is being written and composed every day.

Our game is a mobile adaptation of Call of Cthulhu – the definitive horror roleplaying game created by gaming legend Sandy Petersen in 1981. It is set in the classic Lovecraftian era of 1920s New England and includes several classic scenarios of the original RPG, which together comprise a campaign called Investigations in Lovecraft Country.

investigators and their attributes

Your character is an investigator – someone who, by coincidence or by design, became involved with the mysteries of the Mythos. Some investigators are actual detectives; others are researchers, dilletantes, or even innocent bystanders.

All characters have three attributes: Athleticism, Intelligence and Appearance. Athleticism is a combination of physical strength, coordination, and overall fitness, and is the base stat for combat; Intelligence represents mental acuity, wit, and problem-solving abilities; Appearance represents physical beauty and the forcefulness of the character’s personality. These attributes are used over the course of the game to solve puzzles, engage in combat, and overcome obstacles.

The trials and tribulations of your character will inevitably take a toll on their physical and mental well-being. This is represented by two additional attributes: Health and Sanity. Fighting enemies and overcoming various hardships may cause Health to decrease, while witnessing strange or terrible events will reduce the character’s Sanity. Once either attribute reaches zero, the character will fail the story and must try again.

All investigators have their own unique combinations of these attributes, ensuring different gameplay experience for each. They also have different backgrounds and motivations, influencing the narrative of each story.

Playing Cthulhu Chronicles

story.gif

Cthulhu Chronicles is a combination of interactive fiction (similar to Choose Your Own Adventure™ books), and non-deterministic gameplay inspired by classic RPGs. As you play, you read the narrative, accompanied by art and evocative ambient audio. Occasionally you are prompted to make a choice; some choices are simple (“Go Left” or “Go Right”), while others may involve combat or a test of your character’s attributes.

The first Cthulhu Chronicles campaign, Investigations in Lovecraft Country, consists of 9 stories. In order to experience the narrative in full, we strongly recommend completing the stories in order – going from Alone Against the Flames to Edge of Darkness to Dead Boarder and so on.

IS IT FREE?

Cthulhu Chronicles is free to download and play. You get 3 ‘trials’ every day; one attempt to play any story – whether successful, failed or abandoned – consumes a trial. To play a story as much as you want without worrying about trials, it must be bought with virtual currency – Tickets – available via in-app purchase.

Tips for new players

The first story, Alone Against the Flames, sets the stage for your future adventures. Your character is on their way to Arkham – a college town in New England looking to start a new life. However, they become stranded in a small hamlet, where things are not at all what they seem. Can you escape Emberhead with your life and sanity intact?

You will need to complete Alone Against the Flames to be able to play other stories. Here are some tips on how to do that:

  • As mentioned above, your combat ability is determined by Athleticism. Most encounters in Alone Against the Flames can be avoided, but it is still advisable to go with a strong investigator, such as Samantha Levington or Bobby Zeir.
  • While exploration of Emberhead may reveal many mysteries, your goal is to escape with your life. Some people are secretly working against you, while others are trying in their own way to help. Trust no one, and keep your wits about you.
  • Some choices provide different skill-based paths. If you want to survive, your best bet is to play to your strengths (or wits, or charms—whatever you’re best at).
  • Sanity and Health are precious commodities. You must weigh your immediate health against your long-term survival; knowledge may prove useful, or deadly. Use caution, but don’t stick your head in the sand. Survival lies somewhere between ignorance and insanity.
